Walkie Talkie pt. 2

walkieback2

We have the main body part of the Walkie Talkie complete, now it’s time to move on to the details… All good Walkie Talkies need an antenna, and the BEST have belt clips. Ours have both, so here’s how you make them.

Once we have the speaker holes drilled, it’s time to do some cutting. The students receive a pre measured piece of 3/4″ width lattice, marked at 4 in, 2.5 in and 1.5 in., as seen below.

It is Far Brook Woodshop procedure to keep two hands on the saw at all times. Not only does it give the students more control, but it also keeps the students safe: two hands on the saw means no fingers near the work! The students set up their lattice in the vice and begin cutting.

The resulting 3 pieces are rasped and sanded until smooth. Then comes the fun part. Hammering! We take our pieces and get to work. One nail in the antenna allows it to hinge and adjust. Two nails in the belt clip parts keep those piece in place.

The final nail in the project comes from a 1 inch dowel, cut to a 1/2 inch thick slice. Put a nail in the middle and attach it right under the speaker.
